25th Annual NYMINI Collab Tee - Design Process

Working with New York Strangers Sports Organization (NYSSO) to come up with a design for the 25th annual NYMini volleyball tournament. It was an epic event with more 70 teams across the States and Canada competing for the title.

"The New York Mini was inspired by the game of 9-man volleyball – a game that originated in China in the 1920’s when American missionaries introduced the variant in Tai-Shan."

Emphasizing the geographical significance and the nature of the event, I chose to merge the following:

Originally, I planned to have the Statue itself spiking the ball, but to avoid any gender bias, I ended with the characterized volleyball.

The posture's crucial. For every move from serving the ball, passing or jumping across the court, to rising and spiking the ball may all express very different vibes as to what we'd like to engage the audience with. Since it's a competition, I geared the design towards power, strength, and might, hence the pose below:

With a solid idea in mind, it still took me 40 minutes to really nail down the angles of the arms and perspective of the court. To signify the epicness of this jump, I skewed the court dramatically.

Digitization:

Detail's the key. The texture of the ball tells a lot. I wanted to show that this volleyball ain't no noob on the court. Despite its tiara, sweats and scuffs were added to make this ball a veteran.

Without making it too apparet that this is an anniversary tee, I added the 25th as the back number.

BAM!

The tee's now available here.
